How Mr. Geeky turned from stranger to fiancé

Since we are now engaged, I though I’ll write about how we met for my own record too. Hahaha so here goes:

I first met Mr. Geeky at a cell group session one Thursday in October 2012 (Yep, I used to call him Mr. Phlegmatic but it’s Mr. Geeky now since it’s… err… easier to pronounce hahahaha. Also because he really is quite geeky!). There were about 20 people in the room and a few new members too, so we introduced ourselves one by one. I was sitting quite far away from him and he introduced himself as a student (followed with some “Booooo!” and laughter from the others afterwards. Hahaha). I honestly thought he was really a student! I guess I trusted people too much, eh?

Then I thought he looked quite handsome! But I had no feelings whatsoever towards him because I had just broken up with my then boyfriend for about 2 weeks or so I think?

That was my first cell group session ever, and the next one was in December that year. I had been wanting to go prior to that but I was either occupied with work or just plain lazy.

So I decided to attend the cell group more regularly in December. That was when I found out that he was actually 4 years older than I am! Cehh… cheat my feelings!

Months went by and I still had no feelings towards him just yet, other than my eyes confirming that yes, he is cute and he seems very nice. Hahahaha.

I started to get involved in the cell group more actively and so did he (he has always been actively involved prior to that). He was leading the Praise & Worship ministry and he asked me to join the team as a keyboardist (I think it was in June 2013). Initially I was reluctant because I had never played for a religious community before and I was kinda worried that my skills wouldn’t be up to par. However, he was quite persistent in persuading me to join (I think cos he was desperate due to the lack of keyboardist wtf)! So okay, I decided to give it a try.

We had a pretty regular weekly practice then, so I was meeting him almost every weekend.

One night after the weekly cell group session (on a Thursday), we found out that our offices were actually quite close to each other, like 15 minutes away on foot. I spontaneously asked him to grab lunch together sometime, and he quickly said “Ok! Let’s have lunch tomorrow.”

I was like, “Oh, okay.”- was quite happy cos I got an Indonesian lunch buddy, so I thought we could talk nonsense in Indonesian while gobbling down lunches. Hahahaha

And I was already a little attracted to him by then, but of course I had to survey further right? Heehee

The lunch was okay, there was no awkward silence (he is quite reserved and I am … well, quite the opposite, to say the least). We proceeded to have more lunches together afterwards, usually on Fridays. Before I knew it, the butterflies in my stomach were flapping their wings furiously whenever I was with him.

Our meeting frequency increased to 2-3 times a week. The weekend music practices did contribute some help too. Soon enough he started to ask me out not just for lunch, but dinner too! I didn’t have high hopes then as I thought he could just be interested in me as a friend to hang out with and nothing else.

But he continued to ask me to have meals together! So I was thinking maybe he WAS interested in me. Of course I was happy to be spending time with him, but again, no high hopes were in place. I guess I was afraid of getting disappointed.

From then onwards, I was quite sure he was interested in me, HOWEVER he didn’t broadcast the signal strong enough! It was like yes, no, yes no… You get what I mean?

About 1.5 month before we got together, I found out that he was interested in another girl. I was quite crushed, but I was willing to let him go if he really liked that girl (sounds damn drama!). I didn’t say anything though and pretended I know nothing. I still remember I found out about it on a Saturday evening after we (and a few other friends) went to watch a band competition at a shopping mall.

However, jeng jeng jeng! He texted me the next morning, asking me to have dinner with him. My hopes were lifted back up! Hahahaha. But right after that he remembered that he has got a dinner plan with his friend, so we cancelled it and decided to meet up for dinner on Tuesday the next week.

By that time, I was 70% sure he was into me and I couldn’t deny that I had the same feeling.

Entering October, I found a new job and our offices were nearer than ever. It was like a 5-minute walk to each other. Hahaha! So of course our meeting frequency increased.

There was a public holiday on the 15th day of the month. It was a Tuesday and my company gave us an extra off day on the 14th. When we met up after work, I told him that I was going to have a long weekend because of that. He kept quite for a few seconds and suddenly said that he would apply for leave on the 14th so he could have a long weekend too!

He then asked me to go for a movie on the 14th and I agreed. We met up in the morning for breakfast, bought the movie tickets (wanted to watch Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, but the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes were not that good, so we decided on Gravity instead – it was a good choice btw!) and accompanied him to Toys ‘R Us to find something for his brother in law. We ended the day with sushi dinner at Cold Storage hahahaha. 😀

(Cold Storage is still one of our go-to places for cheap sushi to date)

I actually call it our ‘official first date’. Why? Because I wasn’t sure if our previous dinners and lunches were counted as dates?

But anyway, all’s good. It was his birthday on the 16th and he treated me dinner at Xin Wang (cos we only wanted to have light meals since he was still full from the birthday cake he got from his colleagues).

We could not meet up for dinner the next day (Thursday – by this time we met up for dinner almost everyday), and on Friday, as usual, he asked me whether I have anything planned after work. He asked me out for dinner at Bugis since he had to meet someone there for a while and we could go for dinner afterwards.

So okay, I met him at Bugis and we had dinner at Ah Loy Thai (it has become one of my favourite Thai restaurants. The butter calamari is SO YUMMY!). We then walked to Raffles City and had dessert at Sheng Kee. It was then that he confessed his feelings to me and asked what did I think of bringing our relationship to the next level. Hahahaha damn sweet lah this guy. There was no ‘Would you want to be my girlfriend?’ question, but I like it this way because it’s more matured and he did not say anything sugary sweet, just sincere feelings which I appreciate a lot. Cannot stand guys who sweet talk too much!

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Mr. Geeky and I are 2 different people but somehow our differences brought us together. I guess it’s right when they say opposites attract.

What I like most about him is his sincerity and kindness. He loves his family, especially his mother, and that earns big points in my book. He is very sincere and honest and I really appreciate that, especially since I used to have trust issues due to my past relationship. He wiped it all away though!

He lifts me up when I am down, comforts me when I am sad and treats me like a princess. He never discouraged me from trying or doing things I love and wanted to do. He always encourage me to not give up and he taught me how to manage money better. He used to be very ignorant (which caused an argument in our early stage of relationship) but he is now trying to be less of that. I seriously think I’m very blessed and lucky to have found him. Not sure what I did right, but I thank God every day for giving me such an amazing man who takes care of me so much.

So now we are engaged and I couldn’t be happier! It has been a great and happy journey of 17 months and I can’t wait for us to step up to the next level and spend our lives together 🙂
