PETALING JAYA: Award-winning director Yasmin Ahmad, famed for her advertisements and films capturing the essence of racial harmony in Malaysia, collapsed while attending a meeting at Sri Pentas here.

The 51-year-old creative director at Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur was rushed to the Damansara Specialist Centre yesterday, and underwent brain surgery following a stroke due to bleeding in the brain.

Paediatric surgeon Datuk Dr Zakaria Zahari, Yasmin’s brother-in-law, said she was in a stable but critical condition.

Yasmin had earlier met with TV3 officials, as well as pop diva Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, at Media Prima’s Sri Pentas premises to pitch a potential commercial.

Siti told The Star that during the meeting, Yasmin complained of feeling unwell, cupped her face and rested her head on the table.

Sensing something amiss when Yasmin remained motionless for a few minutes, those present rushed to her side.

“We laid her on the floor. She was having difficulty breathing. A panel doctor from Sri Pentas came to assist.

“While she gave Yasmin mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, I helped with the chest compressions until the ambulance arrived,” said Siti, a former ambassador for the Malaysian Red Crescent Society.

A host of media representatives and personalities had congregated at the hospital where Yasmin was admitted.

Yasmin had previously suffered a stroke about five years ago.

Her parents are on the way from Langkawi to be with her.

Malaysia has lost its’ greatest film director…

Sigh….

KUALA LUMPUR: Award-winning film director Yasmin Ahmad (pic) has died from massive bleeding in the brain at the Damansara Specialist Hospital.

She died at 11.25pm yesterday (Saturday, July 25, 2009). She had undergone surgery following her collapse at the TV3 headquarters Seri Pentas on Thursday.

The 51-year-old movie maker was famed for her advertisements and films capturing the essence of racial harmony in Malaysia.

Relatives, loved ones and a large group of luminaries from the local movie and television scene gathered at the hospital the moment they heard about her death.

Among the first to arrive were veteran actress Fatimah Abu Bakar – a close friend of Yasmin – and Media Prima International CEO Datuk Seri Farid Ridzuan.

Although distraught, those present paid tribute to the award-winning director.

“We would come cross a few great people in our time on earth. Yasmin was one of them.

“She wasn’t an easy person to live or work with, but that was only because she was so talented.

“She had a big heart and vision that we usually don’t understand. That was why people misunderstood her. But she never intended any malice,” said Fatimah.

She added Yasmin’s films had always been about love and forgiveness because that was the way her parents brought her up.

Fatimah’s daughter, Sharifah Amani, who acted in Yasmin’s films, was too distraught as she stood by at her mother’s side.

She refused to talk to the press.

Fatimah and Farid acted as the spokespersons for Yasmin’s family to announce her death and details of her funeral.

TV host Aznil Nawawi, said he had always admired Yasmin’s work although he never had a chance to work with her.

“She possessed the knack on how to capture the essence of Malaysia through her movies and commercials.

“I last saw her when she was promoting her movie Talentime at the Radio Era office,” he added.

Suria FM chief executive officer Engku Imran Engku Zainal Abidin described Yasmin’s death as a great loss – not only to the entertainment and movie industry, but to the nation as a whole.

“Her movies are watched by all races because they can all relate to the messages conveyed.

“We have lost a great, intelligent and creative director,” he added.

Yasmin will be buried after Zohor prayers today, although at press time the location of the burial has yet to be determined.

Fatimah said Yasmin’s body would be taken to the SS19 Mosque in Subang Jaya for prayers.

R.I.P Yasmin….Thanks for your great contribution for film and advertising industry…There won’t be one like you anymore….. 😦

Hi hi!

I’m back from my short trip to Malaysia for 11 days. Reached my home sweet home last night.

But sadly, yea really sad, I spent like more than 1 week by fell sick! Damn!
It really cut my holiday short as I couldn’t go anywhere but stay at home! I’ve had the fever since before I went to Malaysia, but it got worse when I reached there (was it because of you, mochi? lol :p). So yea, I went to the doctor and ate medicine and rest for sure. The worst thing was: the fever only came in the morning around 9/10 am, then by noon, it would have gone and won’t come back until the next morning.

Ah Boon’s dad also checked my pulse and gave me a chinese medicine to drink and it tasted bitter I almost puke at the early stage of drinking. Lol

Because of that, I wasn’t feeling very well on Ah Boon’s birthday, but that day I felt quite like a super woman! Lol. And no fever on that day, just that I could only eat a very small portion of food. Hehehehe…

After I’ve recovered on Thursday last week, it was Ah Boon’s turn to get sick! Arrrhhh…why must this happened??? T_T
He suffered from food poisoning. Not sure whether it’s from the marinara spaghetti he ate the night before or the banana or what, but he did vomit so damn badly. And so he need to rest for the whole day. We finally got the chance to go out *REAL go out* on Saturday to watch “The King and I”, and on Sunday to visit the Petronas Twin Tower Skybridge *Finally I got the chance to go there after 3 eyars in Malaysia..hahaha*

So kasian rite?
Haihh…

Pictures will be uploaded soon. Haven’t transferred them to my computer. Hehehehe…

Dear Ah Boon…

This post is for you…

Well, nothing important bout it. Just wanna post some latest photos of us before I went back to Jakarta…Sorry for not taking so many photos with you lately. I know that you are a high-class narcissist…
